Councillors in Red Lake will give a final reading to a new firearms bylaw at their meeting next week.
The debate on the bylaw has gone on for a few months, after a group of rural property owners felt the current law was too strict.
The new rules, which have been re-written twice, allows in rural areas for a firearm discharged within 400 metres of a park, structure or public space.
In built up areas, including Red Lake’s townsites, the restriction would be one kilometre.
The proposed fine for bylaw infractions is $500.
City administration researched what other communities like Dryden, Kenora and Thunder Bay are doing with respect to rules around discharging firearms.
The Municipality of Red Lake includes five settlements, and is over 600 square kilometres.
